I read on Hibernate site that middlegen will probably provide
some options to auto-generate Hibernate config files from
an existing database.

Is this option already available in the CVS of Hibernate?

Correct. There is an experimental plugin in Middlegen's CVS for that.

I think so, but I believe it will be discontinued since the Hibernate team
has chosen Middlegen as their tool of choice for this. The Hibernate folks
want to do one thing well (being a persistence framework) which I believe is
a wise decision.
