Is Middlegen still be actively developed? I noticed very little activity on
it at the sourceforge website. Also, it is still in beta 1 since late 2002.

Yes it is still active.

There's a big release coming up, with moving Middlegen and refactoring
most of it.

Have a look at the mail sent out by Aslak earlier today (on all
mailinglists).
